Devil World  Nintendo1984Lost in the maze of Devil World, Tamagon the Dragon has to steer clear of the Devil, his nasty co-Devils, and his treacherous helpers, Medaman, the Fried-Eggman and Bon-Bon, and ward off their attacks by breathing fire. After each round, the maze scrolls up, down, right or left. The Devil decides the direction and points with his finger. As you guide Tamagon through the maze, you also have to avoid being sandwiched between the walls.***Devil World is a Pac Man clone with an interesting new element. The maze is automatically scrolling randomly in all directions. So it can happen that you are trapped inside the maze and squished between the maze wall and boundary wall. Additionally there are not only "eat all dots" rounds, but also some rounds where you have to carry bibles found in the maze into the middle of the maze to win the round. These elements work pretty well and give Devil World the necessary extra dimension from being a simple clone.***Only released in Japan and Europe.

What little language usage it has, it's in English, even in the Japanese release.

The Japanese title reads approximately [i]debiru waarudo[/i] (Devil World).

The Tower of Druaga  Namco1985Some may call "Tower of Druaga" an Action-RPG, I call it a clever maze game with usable extra items. Your goal on each floor is to find the exit. Besides that you have to find a treasure chest on each level, which often gives you a bonus item, which might become invaluable in later levels. Here is also my biggest complaint about this game. Besides the repetitive nature of such maze games the appearance of treasure chests is often triggered by certain events like killing a special enemy on the floor. Missing treasure chests on the first floots might make a much later floor nearly unplayable, which is a bit unfair system. Graphically the game is average. Since it is an early Famicom game the mazes don't come in many shapes and looks. labelimageminimize
Dragon Quest  Enix (Chunsoft)1986Mere finger speed and sweat are no match for the challenges of this game. You will be required to use deductive reasoning, not a quick sword to defeat your enemies. All is darkness. The Dragon-lord has captured the Princess and stolen Erdrick's powerful ball of light. You are Edrick's heir. To you has fallen the most dangerous task - to rescue the King's daughter and recover the mystic ball of light.Your mission is deadly, but it is your fate. Prophets have long foretold your coming.Three keepers await your journey, each ready to aid you with a mystic item of great power.Gather the three objects. Scribes will record your deeds. Use cunning and wisdom to choose your commands. Gain experience, weapons and armor as you battle your way through the world. Rest if you must.Search out the Dragon-lord's lair and face your destiny. In this role-playing adventure you are the Dragon Warrior!***"Dragon Quest" has its roots in the Ultima series, but rumour has it that Ultima was too complicated and complex for the Japanese videogaming market. So Dragon Quest, with its simple but very addictive structure, was an instant hit and the start for the most successfull RPG series in Japan. And it is pretty good. Not as non-linear and confusing than many early CRPGs. Nice graphics and music as well.***Product Number: NES-DQ-CAN NES-DQ-USA
Dragon Warrior is called Dragon Quest in Japan. The Japanese version (1986) used passwords but the US (1990) and Canadian versions used battery backed save RAM
A pen and paper RPG called Dragon Quest had already been published in the United States. For copyright reasons, the name Dragon Warrior was used. However, it turns out there was also Dragon Warriors RPG in existence at the time.

The English version was translated and published by Nintendo and [u]strictly[/u] uses Early Modern English [i]in conversational dialogs[/i]. Often mistakenly called King James English or Shakespearian English, but those styles were in fact derived from the Early Modern style (King James style also borrows extensively from Middle English). Early Modern English is in fact a bit more understandable than King James or Shakespearian English, for those who understand the contemporary Modern English of the late 20th century. The Japanese names for the characters and locations were changed into English names that better fit with the Early Modern English and a northern Europeanish location. The changes are influenced by the Arthurian Legends. The Nintendo version also made significant improvement in graphics and game mechanics. The number of menus was reduced. The protagonist could face multiple directions (instead of south only). Direction of talking and actions was automatically based on the direction the protagonist was facing rather than needing to be manually specified. Shorelines looked a bit like breaking waves instead of abrupt hard edges into sea water.

King's Knight  Square (Bits Laboratory)1986
[100]***King's Knight is one of the pre Final Fantasy games and looking at screenshots you might get the opinion that this is a typical action-adventure in Legend of Zelda style. But it is not. It is a vertical scrolling shooting game and a bit unusual. That's because you are controlling four different characters. The first four levels are training stages for each of the characters. In these training stages you have to upgrade your characters by collecting powerups which give you better defense, shooting, speed or jumping abilities as well as extra magical abilities. Nearly everything is hidden beneath rocks, buildings or trees, which can all be shot down. As more powerups you collect as easier will be the fifth and final stage. In the fifth stage you control all of the surviving characters simultaneously, being able to switch the lead character at some points. For a shooting game this feels very strange and ends up less interesting as it might sound. Graphics, music and controls are average and must have felt rather unimpressive when it was released three years after the initial Japanese release in the US in 1989.***キングスナイト is transliteration of "king's knight" and literally reads [code]kingusu naito[/code].***In the kingdom of Izander, the fair Princess Claire has been kidnapped by a foul and insidious dragon, and it is the mission of four brave fighters to save her. Through five thrilling, fast-action stages, our gallant heroes-a knight, a wizard, a monster and a thief-will take on an army of incredible enemies. You must help them reach their goal, as you are now part of the team that will fight to free the princess from her imprisonment. Keep your wits about you, plan your strategy and set off on an exciting adventure.

Doraemon  Hudson Soft1986The first Doraemon game for a Nintendo console consists of three very different stages. In the first stage you run around in a maze-like city with several underground passages that have important extra items. The second stage is a typical shoot'em up sequence with horizontal and vertical scrolling parts. In the third and last stage you have to swim underwater, collect items which opens walls and chests and find your three friends and finally rescue a girl at the end. Technically this game is rather good, there is nearly no flickering and the graphics look ok. Difficulty is rather high. The most annoying part of the game is the third stage and its way you collect and manage your items. You can only carry one item (or two with an extra bag) at the same time. And only three items may be in one screen at once or they don't carry over to the next screen. The game, despite its huge success in Japan, has a bad reputation, but all in all its a pretty average and sadly unfair game. labelimageminimize
King Kong 2: Ikari no Megaton Punch  Konami1986This game is based on the 1986 movie "King Kong Lives", which was also known as "King Kong 2" in Japan. Your goal is to rescue a lovely giant pink female gorilla at the end of nine levels. First you have to find eight keys throughout the levels, each guarded by a boss monster. The game plays similar to the overworld of [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game] or [game=#156357]Nazo no Murasame-Joe[/game], but lacks any RPG or adventure elements. Throughout the levels you can destroy many ground objects in the hopes to find extra items or hidden doors. I doubt however that the game's content has much to do with the movie. So many strange surroundings Kong has do wander through with even stranger enemies. "King Kong 2" is one of the first 2Mbit cartridge games and Konami did a good job with the graphics and music once again. The game also plays well enough.***The subtitle means 'Megaton Punch of Anger'.

The Wing of Madoola  Sunsoft1986Developers were self-compelled to amp up the animation and graphics of this game and some other sunsoft games due to the talent of a new artist at Sunsoft that was creating the cover art for the boxes and labels of several of their games.***In Wing of Madoola you are controlling a girl who is trying to rescue a prince (how original) and defeat the source of all evil at the end of 16 levels. You have a sword and several magical abilities at your disposal. Upgrades for each ability can be found behind doors that are placed in many locations. The game is overall quite nice with graphics that are generally good but which in the end only feature three different graphical themes with lots of color swapping. The game is rather difficult, which in itself is nothing special for a game from around that time, but several wicked monsters that constantly reappear, especially while trying to time difficult jumps, are really annoying. Too often running away from enemies is the best solution. labelimageminimize
Dragon Buster  Namco (Namco;Tose)1987"Dragon Buster" for the Famicom is a port of a 1984 Namco arcade game. The game consists of 12 rounds, each represented by a more or less big overworld map with several levels each. Inside the levels you kill standard enemies with your sword and lots of mid-level bosses inside of rooms. These bosses might open up the passage to the next level or leave extra items behind. Sounds not too bad for a 1987 game but the game suffers from its extreme repetitiveness. There are four or five different graphic sets and you will see them repeating a lot. Every level feels the same. After two or three sub-levels you will have seen everything the game has to offer. After that it becomes very tedious and boring making your way through the more and more labyrinth-like levels. Graphics are not on par with the arcade version; I expected more from a port that comes three years after the arcade game. Controls are rather complicated. Dragon Buster was one of the first (if not the very first) game that implemented mid-air jumping. Pulling this of is not easy though and the controls generally annoyed me.***ドラゴンバスター literally reads [code]doragon basutaa[/code] labelimageminimize
The Goonies II  Konami1987Packin' a heap of ugliness, mean old Ma Fratelli's come back for revenge. And this time she plans to do away with "The Goonies" for good! One by one this crazed mama and her two nutty sons have kidnapped your fellow Goonies, hauling them off to a spooky shack and hiding them in a maze of adventure filled with danger, including the slippery ice cavern, secret underground sea, and eerie attic. Now you're the only Goonie left. The fate of your friends is in your hands. But saving the day won't be easy. Armed with your trusty yo-yo and whatever weapons you can find, you'll be forced to fight off fearsome foes, and solve menacing mysteries. You'll have to be willing to risk it all, being brave and bold, to rescue your buddies, "THE GOONIES!"***

[49]***
[52]***As in the first Goonies game your task is to rescue your friends from the evil Fratelli gang. Goonies II features a bigger scenario and slightly better graphics than its predecessor. And besides the typical platforming scenes it has first-person adventure scenes when entering one of the many doors. But it's exactly the adventure part that I didn't like very much. Most of the time you are hitting the walls and ceilings with your fist or a hammer, hopefully finding secret items or passages. The adventure scenes are also not as good looking. The whole layout of the house and the several cave systems is much more complicated than in the first Goonies game, which was simpler, but worked better in my opinion.

Lost Word of JeNnY: Ushinawareta Message  Takara (Tose)1987"Lost Word of Jenny" is based on the "Jenny" dolls toyline, a kind of Japanese "Barbie". In six levels you are collecting parts of a passcode to finish the game. Compared to Takara's first Famicom game [game=#155967]Transformers: Convoy no Nazo[/game] , "Lost Word of Jenny" is an improvement, but not by much. The levels look different from each other and are connected by a city overworld scenario but have a very repetitive layout. The jumping controls are bad and its nearly impossible to land precise attacks. labelimageminimize
Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family  Namco;Brøderbund (Nihon Falcom)1987Long, long ago, an evil dragon terrorized the forest until it was imprisoned by a powerful wizard. Now, years later, the dragon has revived and it's up to you to use the power of the wizard's descendants, the Draslefamily, to defeat the dragon once again.
The whole family takes part in this action adventure as the parents, children and even the family pet search huge dungeons for gold, keys, magic, hidden crowns and finally the magical sword that can destroy the dragon.***There doesn't seem to be any prominently displayed catalog number on any of the media. Yet the Japanese number is NAM-DS4-4900 and the US number is NES-LC-USA.***[media=youtube]Mw49GWtonLk[/media]***The fourth game in the "Dragon Slayer" series of RPG/action games originating on Japanese homecomputers. You play several members of a family to retrieve four crowns and finally a magical sword to beat an evil dragon. The items can be found in a huge and complicated 16x16 rooms labyrinth. Each of the family members has special abilities giving them advantages in certain parts of the labyrinth (e.g. the father can move blocks, the little sister jumps very high etc.). While the graphics, controls and music are not bad, this game has a huge problem. It is incredibly confusing, complex and difficult. Dead ends, secrets, a ton of unfair spots and a labyrinth design that lets you cry for a good hint book - and even then it is still frustrating.

Batsu & Terii Makyou no Tetsujin Rasu  Use1987Batsu & Terry is based on an 80's baseball-themed manga series. You control either a baseball throwing guy or a baseball bat swinging guy. The game doesn't offer much fun. The levels are full of re-occuring elements and mostly just boring. Most enemies you should just avoid instead of killing them. And the graphics and sound are by far not good enough to draw some positive attention to the game. I mean I have played much worse games on the Famicom/NES, but in the end "Batsu & Terry" struggles to be even a mediocre game. labelimageminimize
Chester Field: Ankoku Shin e no Chousen  Vic Tokai1987"Chester Field" is a platform/action game with combat similar to [game=#7949]Zelda II The Adventure of Link[/game] mixed with typical RPG elements like leveling up, shops to buy better weapons and armor and a few spells. The game features eight levels with an overworld/castle and a complex maze, mostly containing an important object, which is needed for further progress. The game could have been good if the locations wouldn't be so confusing (much is hidden behind destroyable blocks, there are one-way doors etc.) and if the controls were better. labelimageminimize
Majou Densetsu II: Daimashikyou Galious  Konami1987"Majou Densetsu II" is the NES port of the second game in the Knightmare series which was quite popular on Japanese homecomputers and the only one which was ported to the Nintendo console. The story is the same as ever. You, entering a monster-infested castle, trying to save the kingdom by defeating the evil Galious. The special thing is that you can switch between two characters (a male and female one) at any time. Each of them has some special abilities which makes switching between them necessary at certain points. Killing monsters will eventually increase you life bar, you can collect coins to buy and upgrade weapons and items, which gives the game an Action-RPG touch. The typical Konami quality is all there with good controls and audiovisuals (although not quite as good as in some earlier games). However I must say that I was a bit disappointed because at this time in the lifetime of the NES, Konami was the one company that didn't rely on overly complicated, nearly unfair level layouts and tons of not non-apparent secrets. But sadly "Majou Densetsu II" features all that. Without a map or very strong nerves you won't stand much of a chance. labelimageminimize
Dragon Scroll: Yomigaerishi Maryuu  Konami1987Dragon Scroll is an interesting Zelda-like action adventure game. It plays and looks all right, but there are two issues that prevents it from being really great. First of all the fact that many important items are hidden too well. So I definitely must recommend using a walkthrough. And the rather uninspired battle/fighting mechanics. labelimageminimize
Konami Wai Wai World  Konami1988
[30]***From time to time I get surprised by games, something that Konami Wai Wai World achieves. I did not expect a strange crossover platform/action title starring a dozen or so of Konami's heroes. The main protagonists are Konami-Man and Konami-Girl who try to rescue kidnapped Konami heroes from their respective levels. And there you have them all. Castlevania, The Goonies, Getsu Fuumaden, Goemon and even a classic vertical scrolling shooting level very similar to Twinbee and Life Force. Once you rescue one of the other Konami heroes you can switch to them whenever you want and use their special abilities which are sometimes needed in order to rescue the next hero. Otherwise the six starting levels can be finished in any order you want. Graphics are fine with lots of different stages and enemies and the music resembles the classic tunes of the other games which is a good idea. The bad part of the game is the gameplay itself, which is only slightly above average with some very difficult moments. Walking down stairs, and hitting enemies proved to be more annoying than I hoped.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link  Nintendo1988There is an extremely obscure bug in the game whereby the attack value which normally maxes out at 8 can be set to something else. "0" and "F" have been seen. Both of these, with two exceptions, will allow Link to kill any enemy with one hit. The exceptions are the Thunderbird boss which requires one hit but the thunder spell must still be cast on it first. Shadow Link still requires 8 hits. No one has discovered what triggers this bug. It can be saved and in fact cannot be undone from a saved game.***

[37]***Link returns to Hyrule to search for the Triforce and to awaken Zelda from an endless sleep. Embark on a quest to find the Triforce of Courage and save Hyrule from ruin. Learn magic spells, talk to people in towns to get clues, collect items to increase your power and explore six palaces where the underlings of the evil Ganon await you.

This sequel to the Adventure classic uses a side-scrolling visual engine unique to the series for more technical combat, and features more in-depth world roaming as Link encounters townsfolk while on his quest.***A year and a half after the original Famicom Disk System release in Japan, Nintendo brought this game to the west on cartridge. Desptite being a quite good game, Zelda 2 is my least favorite of the classic Zelda games. It surely explored a new gameplay style but the levels were too difficult and I didn't like the random enemy encounter battle system (the similar "[game=#7581]The Battle of Olympus[/game]" would prove to be much better balanced in my eyes). Graphics and sound are very good for its time. Nintendo understood how to program their 8-bit console.

King of Kings  Namco (Atlus)1988Not related to [game=#7923]Wisdom Tree's King of Kings[/game]

One player, two player, three player, or four players take turns in concurrent/competing/cooperative play. (the game is designed for both competitive and cooperative strategies)
One to four players receive funds for each city they occupy. With these funds they can build different troop types including humans or fantastic creatures. Each troop type moves better or worse in different terrains. Differing movement abilities and the way the different kinds of troops interact with each other, having different strengths and weaknesses depending on which type that are battling with, means strategy is emphasized over sheer numbers or experience of each unit (but the latter two are still advantageous).

Human Units: King (only one per player), Fighter, Knight>Silver Knight>Dragon Knight, Monk>Priest>Bishop, Sorcerer>Mage>Wizard.
Fairy Units: Goblin, Harpy, Elf, Giant, Gryphon
Dragon Units: Lizardman, Wyvern, Serpent, Dragon
Other Units: Golem, Skeleton

Final Fantasy II  Square1988Very good RPG. Played this back when I was but a child. ^^ Up to now I still love it.***1player only
SQF-FY ファイナルファンタジーII/Final Fantasy II published 1988-12-17 by Square in Japan.
Final Fantasy II: Dark Shadow Over Palakia was going to be the title of the USA publishing.
MSRP: 6,500円

This is the second game in Square's popular Final Fantasy series. It was released only in Japan (the Japanese Final Fantasy IV was released as Final Fantasy II in the U.S.). The game emphasizes the storyline more than the first game: four young refugees from a conquered kingdom join a rebel movement in hopes of striking back at their oppressors. Players must engage in conversion collecting key words to ask key people about in order to advance the plot. Character's have identities and personalities unlike in FF1. This is emphasized by character portraits of all the player characters, the fact that there are many player characters that come and go as their role in the plot dictates, and the frequent use of player characters' names by NPC's. Familial relationships between characters are also frequently noted. The graphics aren't terribly advanced beyond FF1's, but the experience system was completely revamped. Instead of gaining EXP and levels, the heroes gain points in the abilities that they use. Attacking a lot increases strength. Getting hit a lot increases defense. Casting the Fire spell a lot increases the spell's power. Using an axe increase axe fighting ability. An interesting concept (usually reserved for computer RPGs), but one that makes for a difficult game (as long as the endemic exploits of this game's system are not utilized). A translation to English patch for the ROM is available.

This is the Final Fantasy volume that introduced Chocobos and Cid

[Zerothis]***Sequel of the successful Final Fantasy. It has a really good storyline and a new system where you have to improve abilities/skills by using them, instead of gaining XP and levels in the traditional way. Still a good RPG, but I really didn't like the way the skill system seduced you to find ways to make leveling up easier by e.g. hitting your own party members. It somehow ruined the whole pace of the game.

Dragon Spirit: The New Legend  Namco;Bandai (Namco)1989For years now the kingdom of Olympia had enjoyed a wonderful period of peace. Even the fearful tale of King Amru's heroic battle with the demon Zawel had been long forgotten by his happy subjects. And when Amru's marriage to Alicia was blessed with the birth of the royal twins, Lace and Iris, the kingdom took it as a sign that the Fates were looking favorably upon them. But little did they know that far to the east the wicked Galda had been amassing an army of evil the likes of which could not be imagined in the blackest thoughts of mankind. Even the fearsome Zawel had been resurrected from the dead to join the murderous cause. Suddenly, without warning, Galda had struck, kidnapping Princess Iris and her attending maids for a sacrificial offering in the Ceremony of the Dark. As Amru lay helplessly on his death bed he knew there was but one hope for rescuing his beloved daughter and saving the kingdom from total destruction. He must finally reveal the secret of the magical sword of Arlia to his son, Prince Lace. The mighty spirit of the Blue Dragon must rise again! labelimagesubject

Ultima: Quest of the Avatar  FCI;Pony Canyon (Infinity;Atelier Double)1989The ruthless Triad of Evil has been vanquished and peace now reigns in the land. But without the threat of danger the people have become corrupt. Darkness dwells in their hearts and minds. The countryside is plagued by dragons, trolls, and long-dead wizards. Only an Avatar, a shining example of heroism, can destroy the monsters and conquer the internal wickedness with his mastery of magic and weapons. Become the Avatar! Save Britannia! And master the challenges of the ultimate quest--the search for good within yourself. labelimagesubject
Dungeon Magic: Sword of the Elements  Taito;Natsume (Natsume)1989A dark storm veils the sun, twisting trees and sowing terror. Deep in the earth the devil Darces emerges to rule over all. Join in the quest for Tores, the only sword with magic enough to smite Darces the Overlord. Search ancient caves, dank dungeons and mysterious mazes for clues to the age-old prophecy. Receive blessings and cast wondrous spells. Every step brings danger, every town holds a secret. If at last you understand, you can call the elements to your ultimate triumph!***Confusingly, this has nothing to do with Taito's Dungeon Magic in the arcades. Dragon's Lair  Sony Imagesoft;Elite;Epic Sony Records (MotiveTime)1990The NES version came first and the European and Japanese releases came later. There is uncompiled assembly code in the ROM. It doesn't do anything, it is just recorded in the unused space in the ROM. Accidentally included to be sure. The source code reveals that a PDS development system was used (software and peripheral for x86 MS-DOS). European and Japanese releases are significantly different and use an MMC3 chip and character ROM rather than UNROM which used a RAM chip that was populated by code in the program ROM. The MMC3 version runs much, much faster.***

Dirk the Daring walked steadily toward the castle gate. He felt no fear. Fear was for cowards, not the most courageous knight in the land. 1 player or 2 player hotseat ,pde.
Choose a red, gold or bronze dragon to battle with. Each type of dragon has different abilities and dragons. Dragons have two different breath weapons. This is a scrolling shoot but the dragons can fly in any direction to the edges of the map. They can also fly at two levels, diving in close to take out small targets or to dodge aerial opponents. Dragons must battle dragon slayers on the ground and even other dragons. There are three levels of difficulty.

In 2 player mode, the other player immediately takes over the mission when the previous dies.

This game is notable different from the other version of DragonStrike in that is it an multilevel overhead scrolling shooter rather than a flight sim like the others.
